What is Genital Herpes (Herpes Simplex Virus)?
Herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) that any sexually active person can get. Most people with the virus don’t have symptoms. It is important to know that even without signs of the disease, it can still spread to sexual partners.
Signs and Symptoms of Genital Herpes (Herpes Simplex Virus)
- Usually it's asymptomatic, or have mild symptoms that pass unnoticed.
- Visible symptoms that occur are one or more vesicles on or around the genitals, rectum or mouth, when they break they create painful ulcers that takes two to four weeks to heal.
- Clinical manifestations of genital herpes differ between the first and recurrent outbreaks:
- First outbreak is often associated with a longer duration of herpetic lesions, increased viral shedding (making HSV transmission more likely) and systemic symptoms including fever, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, or headache
- Recurrent outbreaks are common, in particular during the first year of infection. Approximately half of patients who recognize recurrences have prodromal symptoms, such as mild tingling or shooting pains in the legs, hips or buttocks, which occur hours to days before the eruption of herpetic lesions
