Lip enhancement surgeries are popular around the world, people trying to gain fuller and more attractive lips. This has been brought about by influence from the media and fashion magazines that depict people with fuller lips as beautiful. Cosmetic surgery can be performed on a person who wants fuller lips. The process is either surgical or non-surgical, the latter a home treatment program where the patient is given something to inject in the lips. Lip augmentation has been in the global community since after 1995. This gained popularity because the procedure became cheaper. There was a time when lip enhancement was for the up market in the society.
The process became cheaper due to the introduction of substances that had long been used in other medical procedures. Biocompatible substances that were strictly used for specific processes became available to plastic surgeons. The materials are used to augment misshapen lips and add fullness to thin lips. Some of the processes and materials include:
- A substance called autologen – material manufactured from the patient’s skin and injected into the lip.
- Alloderm – this is skin tissue from a cadaver or corpse. The skin is processed, purified and treated thoroughly to remove any infection from the corpse.
- Collagen – the material to be injected into the lip is derived from bovine skins.
- Radiance – this is a solution processed in the laboratory combining calcium hydroxylapatite and gel. This combination has been around in medicine for many years.
Advantages of Lip enhancement
- The person is able to view himself in a better way. Any cosmetic surgery, when properly done, increases the person’s self-esteem. People who were once afraid of what people will perceive are not bold enough to live their lives without any hindrance from esteem issues.
- In the case of misshapen lips, correcting this will improve the speech of the person. Some people have speech impairments because the lips are not shaped properly. When augmentation and correction is done, the person is able to speak and express himself. Some people were in pain, physically or psychologically, but thanks to corrective surgery, the pain can be taken away.
- Lip enhancement has opened a new branch in the field of medicine thereby opening up job opportunities for people. As the trend is steadily catching pace in other countries, more and more people can find employment.
Disadvantages of Lip enhancement
- In relation to esteem, if the process is done shabbily, the patient will have low self-esteem. This is because people will stare and comment negatively about the look. Tabloid newspapers because of a lip enhancement procedure gone wrong have devoured celebrities. As a result, the esteem and image of the person is destroyed.
- Some serious medical emergencies have occurred due to the patient reacting badly to some substance injected in the lips. Although this is carelessness on the part of the doctor, still the one affected is the patient.
Since lip augmentation is not permanent, the costs incurred by the patient are high. Some procedures are more expensive than others are. Maintaining the enhancement means extra cost for the patient.
