During the course of a hectic day, you may not pay too much attention to your health. You eat and drink whatever comes your way and sometimes skip food due to work pressure. But soon you may find yourself suffering from stomach bloating - a very uncomfortable problem, which leads to belching, passing gas and pain. And if this happens you find it difficult to concentrate on work.
Moreover, frequent stomach bloating may be the indication of something serious and calls for a thorough checkup. But most importantly, you should know how to reduce stomach bloating on your own. Here are some handy tips which will help you for sure:
- Try to regularize your bowel movements. If there is a set pattern, usually stomach bloating does not occur. In case you are suffering from pain due to bloating, a visit to the toilet may resolve the situation immediately.
- Bloating can also be caused by the food you eat. There are some foods, which are rich in carbohydrates and lead to the formation of gas when digested. Cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, baked beans and carbonated drinks are some of the main culprits and you should consume them in limited amounts.
- Similarly, fatty foods can also cause bloating and need to be avoided as far as possible. These foods slow down the digestive process and this causes food to ferment, thus producing more gas.
- You may experience bloating when you embark on a high-fiber diet. Though fiber-rich foods aid digestion, they also produce gas in large volumes upon digestion. So, it is a good idea to gradually increase the intake of fiber to reduce bloating. You may also persist with your diet, waiting for the bloating problem to pass, but that is a big risk.
- The presence of sodium in food is another reason why bloating occurs frequently. So, you should consume foods that have low sodium content. Baked potatoes, fresh fruits and vegetables, roasted meat are some good examples. Avoid canned soups because they contain a large amount of sodium.
- Milk and milk products contain lactic acid compounds which produce gas on digestion. So, you should watch your consumption of these products to reduce bloating. Non-frozen yogurts and aged cheeses are low on lactose and are relatively safe in this respect.
- Avoid consuming food and drinks which are really hot, because you may inadvertently draw in excess air while trying to have them. Hot beverages such as coffee and tea are best avoided if you are experiencing a bloating problem.
- To expedite digestion and prevent the formation of gas in your stomach, you can go for a short walk after a meal. Walk at a slower than usual pace, in order to prevent any uneasiness.
If stomach bloating becomes a recurrent problem despite trying these ideas to reduce it, you must see a doctor. There may be problems in your colon or digestive tract which require immediate medical attention. So, it would be better not to ignore them!
