If one is going to be outdoors for an extended period for activities such as gardening or painting, they should wear a light weight covering of fabric over their neck, chest, back and arms. Even something as light as thin cotton (such as t-shirt material) can provide a great deal of UVA and UVB blockage. Lighter colors are best, especially white, as they tend to reflect sunlight. This reflection not to only helps to protect your skin, but also to keep you cooler. This is also good advice for anyone who has to work outside such as landscapers and construction workers.
Another important consideration that one should keep in mind in regard to Sun safety is post Sun exposure to care for their skin. Immediately after any prolonged session of sun exposure one should ensure that they are replacing the moisture and essential oils that have been depleted from the skin. This can be done by applying an aloe rich gel-based care product to the areas of greatest exposure, followed by an allover moisturizer containing Shea butter. Additionally for a couple of days after heavy sun exposure use a cocoa butter-based soap and pour whole milk into bath water, which is only slightly above room temperature.
