Teeth whitening procedures have become a national obsession in the last decade. The procedure has gone from practically unheard of to an everyday procedure for some. There are home teeth whitening procedures, procedures that can only be done in a dentist’s office, and even laser teeth whitening procedures that are performed at booths in the mall.
Whitening toothpastes have virtually replaced standard toothpastes. There are chewing gums that are intended to whiten your teeth, mouthwash, and the list goes on and on. Though it is extremely popular, tooth whitening is not without risks. Here are some common side effects to the chemical bleaching or whitening of teeth.
Sensitivity
For reasons that are not fully understood many people who whiten their teeth, especially those who do it regularly or often, begin to suffer from extreme sensitivity. Something about the chemicals used to whiten teeth can affect the gums and enamel causing severe pain. In some cases the chemicals can get into a tooth’s nerve system through cracks in a filling and result in extreme pain, a root canal or tooth removal is the only solution for this issue.
Uneven Tone
For many people, especially those who use at home teeth whitening procedures, excessive use can lead to uneven tone. Instead of having teeth that are one, not so porcelain but uniform color, you end up with teeth that are a variety of different shades of white. Dentists have also discovered that for many users of teeth whitening treatments the enamel begins to take on a bluish tone.
Improper Usage
Though it is more common with at home teeth whitening treatments then professional ones, improper procedure can lead to a multitude of issues. If you get the solution that is used in many over the counter whiteners on your gums it can burn the tissue on your gums which can lead to extreme discomfort. Accidentally swallowing the solution can also lead to some pretty nasty side effects. These include vomiting and dizziness. It is important to remember that though doctors and dentists agree that these chemicals are relatively safe, they are chemicals none the less.
Addiction
Many people just can’t seem to get their teeth white enough. They enjoy the way their teeth look after they first get a dental or home teeth whitening. They like it so much that they are devastated when the shiny bright whiteness of newly bleached teeth starts to wear off. To keep up the fresh look they start to bleach their teeth more and more. At some point it becomes an addiction. Dentists actually have to turn patients away at times who are requesting far too many dental teeth whitening treatments per year. Though it is not recommended that you whiten your teeth more than once or twice yearly, many people are beginning to request touch up every month.
Over whitening is what leads to painful complications for most people. It does not matter if you are using over the counter teeth whitening treatments or professional treatments, both can be addictive and both can lead to a great deal of pain and suffering.
